After graduating from Melbourne University in 1966 John Presser began his forensic career in May 1973 when he joined the State Forensic Laboratory in Victoria. He received a Chief Commissioners certificate in 1978 for the expansion of genetic markers used in bloodstain casework.

In 1980 he joined the Forensic Biology Laboratory of Tasmania as head of the Unit. In 1986 John was gazetted a disputed parentage tester and reporter for the Commonwealth Family Law Act. John has been a member of the Australian and New Zealand Forensic Science Society since 1974 and has had published nine forensic biology papers in the literature. In 1994 John was awarded a letter of commendation for the successful use of STR DNA in the successful prosecution of the 1980 homicide of Amanda Carter to go with the team award from the aboriginal community for the successful conviction in the Shirley Burgess murder in 1987.
